Dipole approximations applied to the inverse problem in boreholes. A numerical study

Résumé

Dipole-like approximate formulations of the electric field radiated by a vertical magnetic dipole placed on the axis of a multicylindrical lossy dielectric structure can be inverted in order to retrieve some of its geometrical and electrical parameters from measurements of the azimuthal field at one or more receivers (loops) located on the axis. This study is focused on the case of a three-layer cylinder which models a simple well-logging situation in the MHz range: a borehole filled with a known fluid, a homogeneous invaded formation with unknown radius and complex permittivity and the pre-existing homogeneous earth (thick bed) to be probed. Interest and current limitations of such an approach are discussed from numerous simulations performed in typical situations. It is shown in particular that the complex permittivity of the uninvaded medium and some information on the invaded zone (electrical thickness) can be inferred from the fields at two receivers in cases of physical significance.
