Kinetics and mechanism of nitridation of silicon powder in mixture with silicon carbide

Abstract : The nitridation of a mixture of silicon and silicon carbide powders was investigated by thermogravimetry in the range from 1200 to 1420degreesC. It was found that the microstructure and morphology of reaction products is similar to the bonding phase of industrial silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide investigated earlier. The relationships between microstructure of formed Si3N4 and reaction temperature, nitriding gas composition and silicon powder size were established
