Synthesis and formulation of a bactericide polyurethane varnish

Environmentally friendly paints are up to date due to the increase of toxicological regulations. This practical work will enable us to synthesize a polyurethane varnish (more simple than a paint) but with the advantage of being bactericide by contact with leaving organisms and not by release of toxic compounds as it is often carried out. The bactericide function is a quaternary ammonium salt which will be introduced into the oligomer by a synthesis in two steps (formation of a polyol). The last work consists in a formulation of this product as well as to obtain a polyurethane varnish with physical properties compatible with microbiological tests.
Les peintures dites « respectueuses de l’environnement » sont un sujet d’actualité au moment où des réglementations toxicologiques apparaissent en grand nombre. À défaut de la fabrication d’une peinture, qui est un peu compliquée dans un TP, la synthèse d’un vernis polyuréthane va être décrite. Ce dernier présentera la caractéristique d’être bactéricide par simple contact avec les organismes vivants et non par relargage de produits toxiques comme c’est souvent le cas. La fonction bactéricide choisie est un sel d’ammonium quaternaire qui sera introduit sur un oligomère par une synthèse en deux étapes (obtention d’un polyol). Le dernier stade de ce travail va consister à formuler, de façon judicieuse, le polyol fonctionnalisé afin d’obtenir un vernis polyuréthane dont les propriétés physiques permettraient d’effectuer des tests microbiologiques.
